Bay offers single IP solution for voice and fax

Johannesburg, 26 May 1998

Bay Networks` Voice Gateway 4000 is a hardware/software solution that acts as a bridge between a corporate PABX - or a public switched telephone network (PSTN) - and Internet protocol (IP) data networks, allowing seamless voice communications between the two technologies. By enabling enterprise and service provider customers to interface with their PABXs or local telephone exchanges, Voice Gateway 4000 provides customers with a toll by-pass solution that enables large savings on domestic, long distance and International telephone charges. The Voice Gateway 4000 is the first Voice over IP (VoIP) product solution resulting from Bays` partnership with NetSpeak Corporation, and is a key component of Bays` Adaptive Networking IP Services strategy. Large enterprises with multiple distributed sites can take advantage of tremendous cost savings for their voice calls with this technology. Bays` Voice Gateway 4000 allows the user to transmit voice communications in the form of digital packets far more efficiently than circuit-switched transmissions because it uses spare capacity on the existing intranet or virtual private network. The result is better network bandwidth usage, network efficiency and cost reductions based on the ability to leverage the existing investments in network infrastructure. Voice Gateway 4000 represents Bays` first step in unveiling its unified VoIP strategy. By combining Bays` data expertise with NetSpeak`s strong Voice over IP technology, a solid foundation is established for an end-to-end VoIP solution for Carrier, ISP, and Enterprise customers. The product can support up to four T1 lines in a single chassis and is available with a minimum density of 24 digital ports, ranging up to configurations supporting 96 ports per gateway. Support for E1 lines, scalable from 30 to 120 digital ports, will be available later this year. For maximum flexibility, the Voice Gateway 4000`s T1 spans are field upgradable and multiple chassis may share common management. Management of the Voice Gateway 4000 may be done locally or remotely and is accomplished through the Control Center Software, a Windows 95 or Windows NT-based software package that ships with the gateway. Related Voice Services available for the Voice Gateway 4000 are the Event Manager and Gateway Routing Manager software. The Event Manager acts as a repository for all Gateway events and transactions, which allows detailed call records and billing reports to be centrally stored and managed. The Gateway Routing Manager provides the means of routing calls to the most appropriate gateway based upon user-defined routing criteria. Bays` commitment to VoIP is not new, decisions with respect to product design and development were made several years ago to accommodate VoIP technology. Bays` investment in NetSpeak, along with its relationship with Stratus for SS7 support are the latest actions supporting Bays` voice strategy. Because of its early recognition of the VoIP market, Bay is uniquely positioned to truly provide carrier class VoIP-enabled products and services.
