Continuing its tradition of network management market leadership, Bay Networks has raised standards for RMON/RMON2 probes with the announcement of the Series 1000 Ethernet WEB PocketProbe network monitoring device. Being the newest member of the Optivity StackProbe family, it provides full RMON/RMON2 support at a fraction of the cost of traditional probes. It also provides the network manager with unsurpassed mobility and simplicity through an embedded Web server and a Java applet that allows devices to be easily managed from anywhere using a Web browser. With the introduction of this product, monitoring remote sites and legacy devices are no longer cost-prohibitive. By offering an embedded traffic monitoring application, the Series 1000 Ethernet WEB PocketProbe tool provides network managers the means to monitor and evaluate the performance of the network - an essential component of Quality of Service (QoS). The embedded traffic monitoring application offers a Java-based graphical user interface that tracks network health, server availability and network response time. The Web interface displays data in easy-to-read pie charts, meters, bar graphs and list memo boxes. Unlike static HTML interfaces, the Java-based display is dynamic, continuously updating the display with valuable network performance information. The device is small (4' x 6') and light which enables the network manager to install it where there is an immediate need and easily move it as the corporate network changes and evolves. The Series 1000 Ethernet WEB PocketProbe network monitoring tool is part of Bay's efforts to eliminate the constraints of time and distance. The device's Web interface allows the network manager to collect network traffic data at any time and from anywhere. The Web browser interface combined with the low price-point and device portability makes the Series 1000 Ethernet WEB PocketProbe monitoring tool ideal for monitoring remote LANs. Finally, Network managers now have access to important RMON data on demand. The Series 1000 Ethernet WEB PocketProbe network monitoring tool provides powerful RMON/RMON2 instrumentation for shared and switched Ethernet networks, collecting traffic information from devices on an Ethernet network and forwarding it to the traffic monitoring application. The built-in Java applet lets users access data on network health, server availability and network response time via a Web browser from anywhere within the network. The network health report provides information on network usage, packet destination, utilisation and more. The server availability profile provides information on the availability of user-defined servers while the network response time view provides information on current and historical response time to the selected servers. In addition to accessing network performance data from anywhere within the network, a Web browser can also be used to configure the Series 1000 Ethernet WEB PocketProbe. This feature greatly simplifies remote configuration. Technical support for the product is also available using a Web browser. A simple mouse-click from within the Web-based monitoring application will take the user to the most current release notes, user manuals, and data sheets for the device on Bay Networks corporate servers. The new monitoring tool is based on Intel's i960 RISC processor family, and comes with one standard 10 Mbps Ethernet interface, one serial configuration port, and 16 MB of memory. The Series 1000 Ethernet WEB PocketProbe instrumentation offers full support of RMON RFC 1757 and RMON2 RFC 2021, providing valuable functionality at both the network and application layers. For full-powered, more detailed RMON/RMON2 reporting, the device is fully compatible with the Optivity Enterprise, Optivity Campus and Optivity Analysis NT network management applications. When used with any of these applications, the Series 1000 Ethernet WEB PocketProbe acts as a single-port Ethernet StackProbe.
