Bay Networks, a Nortel Networks line of business, has announced that its recently introduced BayStack 450 Switches drove a strong 9.5 percent revenue share gain in the competitive 100Mbps workgroup switch market and overtook the market position of competitor Cisco Systems, according to the 1998 third quarter report from the Dell'Oro Group.
Bay Networks attributes this rapid market share gain as validation of the BayStack 450 Switches' value proposition: workgroup switches that offer the reliability, resiliency, and performance of traditional chassis switching in a form that allows the customer to grow the network as needed. The BayStack 450 Switches, which only began shipping mid-way through the third quarter 1998, are the first and only 10/100/1000 Ethernet switches to feature fail-safe stackability, flexible choices for high-speed uplinks including Gigabit Ethernet and ATM, advanced software features, and the fastest packet-forwarding rate in its class. This level of performance and resiliency are critical to building Unified Networks infrastructures that are capable of supporting telephony and data applications.
"Nortel Networks' BayStack 450 Switches have changed everything. Large enterprise customers now have a more flexible solution for wiring closets, and small/medium business customers can build high-density wiring closets as their needs grow, without having to make a large investment up front," said Nortel Networks channel operations manager Francois Bodart.
Bodart added, "This has been our strongest launch in the BayStack product line. Nortel Networks' direction and reach in the fast-growing market of workgroup switches has been a success, and well accepted by the end-users looking for ways to create Unified Network solutions."
The unique cascade stacking architecture of the BayStack 450 Switches protects the stack's integrity so that even if a switch in the stack is removed, all remaining switches can communicate at the full non-blocking 2.5 Mbps cascade bandwidth. Up to eight BayStack 450 Switches can be stacked into a single managed unit with up to 224 ports.
