BB&D celebrates 25 years of software development, integration services

Johannesburg, 01 Sep 2009

Leading software development and integration services group, Barone, Budge and Dominick (BB&D), has reached a landmark among the elite of the South African ICT sector - its 25th anniversary.

BB&D was established on 1 September 1984 by Sandra Barone, Tom Budge and Ralf Dominick, developing custom software solutions for blue-chip banking and treasury clients.

From its initial three founders, BB&D has grown to over 450 employees across five major business units, with offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Nicosia (Cyprus). The business units focus on custom software development (BB&D Core); customer interaction solutions and contact centre integration (Sepia Unified Communications); electronic funds transactions (Nomad); specialised insurance solutions (Innosys) and financial services risk and compliance consulting (BB&D Risk).

The company's client base includes many of the major SA banks, fund managers, insurance companies, telecommunications providers, retailers and government departments.

“It has been an exciting and eventful journey,” says Ralf Dominick, founder and CEO. “We have seen major paradigm shifts in the software technology playing field over the last 25 years. We have adapted well to these shifts, and in some cases, we have set the trends around these shifts.”

Says Managing Director, Peter Searle: “We have maintained a pragmatic and stable view of growth over the past two-and-a-half decades. Our commitment to delivery - no matter what it takes - has always been our core value, and we find that we have grown strongly through word-of-mouth communication and our reputation of having the top custom software development skills in South Africa.”

Another important milestone in the company's history occurred in March 2007 when Sphere Private Equity became a 35.75% shareholder, providing the company with a solid anchor investor and strong black economic empowerment credentials. At the same time, 10% of the company's share capital was set aside for a staff trust to benefit staff members.

“We remain optimistic about the future of the software development industry and BB&D's role in this going forward, both locally and internationally,” says Richard Kantor, Group Marketing Executive. “There are a number of new trends that we are actively tracking, such as open source development, cloud computing and context-aware computing. In addition, we have diversified to offer a range of additional services aligned to our core role of developing software solutions as a strategic enabler, and will continue to do so.”
