JSE-listed packaging manufacturer Nampak has signed a three-year contract with local services company Business Connexion (BCX).

Nampak IT manager for Africa Toni Serra will not reveal the details of the contract, but says the value exceeds R100 million.

Last year, Serra said Nampak had decided to extend its services contract with BCX on a month-to-month basis. This was due to a decision to take a "gap year" before putting its IT support and maintenance requirements out to tender.

"We are redefining our technology and identifying what we hope to achieve before speaking to potential business . Outsourcing is, by its very nature, a long-term relationship," he explained.

New parameters

Sandy Purbrick, BCX's GM of industrial and commercial cluster for the Johannesburg region, says Nampak went to the market quite aggressively with its requirements.

"Nampak put quite a bit of pressure on us. They also spoke to some Indian and global companies to see what was on offer. They came back to us though, which is an affirmation of the value we have been delivering to them."

Under the terms of the new contract, BCX will act as Nampak's end-to-end infrastructure service provider. This will cover all of Nampak's IT requirements from desktop to centre, says Purbrick.

"This contract also provides a new dimension to the services we will offer Nampak. Under the new deal, we will manage all its other ICT suppliers - including Telkom - and provide the company with a single service level agreement."
