BEA Systems, Inc., have announced the general availability of release 3.1 of the BEA WebLogic Java application server for IBMAS/400e. With this announcement, BEA is adding AS/400e to the product`s family of supported production platforms for the BEA WebLogic Java application server. BEA WebLogic for AS/400e combines the rich Java application platform of BEA WebLogic with the robustness, scalability and reliability of the AS/400e platform. This combination offers a powerful solution for delivering mission-critical, distributed Web applications.
"Enterprises are working aggressively to `network enable` their application portfolios so that information services can be easily extended across Intranets, extranets, and the Internet," said Alfred Chuang, chief technology officer at BEA Systems, Inc. and general manager of the BEA WebXpress division. "IBM and BEA are making this happen through the Java enterprise standards, including the flagship component model, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB). These Java industry standards unite web, database, distributed components, and existing IBM technologies ranging from DB2 to IBM`s San Francisco.
With the BEA WebLogic application server, AS/400 applications can be easily extended to the Internet via web browsers (Java applets or HTML), Java client applications, and Microsoft desktops such as Visual Basic, Visual C++, or PowerBuilder applications. Existing RPG applications can be incorporated within BEA WebLogic EJB using IBM`s AS/400 Toolbox for Java, which can greatly simplify exporting these applications over the Web and integrating them with other applications. BEA WebLogic also provides the security, scalability, availability, and transactional integrity demanded for mission-critical deployments.
The BEA WebLogic Java application server complements AS/400e by enabling the AS/400 platform to integrate with the other disparate environments that enterprises count on to run their businesses. The BEA WebLogic Java application server allows businesses to extend their AS/400 applications to serve customers across the Internet, business partners over extranets, and employees over large-scale intranets. And with the BEA WebLogic application server, developers are also free to deploy Java applications developed for UNIX or NT on AS/400e. The rapid certification of BEA WebLogic on AS/400 further validates the flexibility and robustness of both BEA WebLogic and the AS/400 Java platform.
IBM and BEA have been working together to ensure that the BEA WebLogic application server is appropriately optimized for the AS/400e, and that WebLogic is well-integrated with both DB2/400 (via Type 2 and Type 4 Java Database Connectivity/JDBC drivers) and with "IBM HTTP Webserver for AS/400" (via a high-performance native plug-in). The BEA WebLogic application server also works easily with other products that are key to AS/400 customers, including:
Novell
Microsoft COM for easy access to AS/400 services from Microsoft Visual Basic, Visual C++, Active Server Pages, and other Microsoft environments
Industry leading Java tools, including IBM VisualAge, Symantec Visual Cafe, Inprise JBuilder, and Microsoft Visual J++
Industry leading web publishing tools, including Lotus, SymantecVisual Page, Microsoft Front Page, and Macromedia Dreamweaver.
