At Linux Expo, BEA Systems, Inc, a market leader in enterprise middleware and mission-critical Web solutions for the world`s largest corporations, have announced the immediate availability of BEA TUXEDO and BEA WebLogic Server for Linux( running on Intel Architecture servers. BEA is the first vendor to provide customers with both enterprise middleware and Java application servers for the popular Linux operating system. BEA TUXEDO and BEA WebLogic Server allow Linux developers to write enterprise applications once, and deploy them on virtually any of the more than 50 platforms that BEA supports without modifying the code.
In conjunction with the introduction of the new Linux releases, BEA also introduced a new developer promotion, that makes it easy for Linux developers to access and begin using BEA middleware. BEA is offering a free single-user evaluation license of BEA TUXEDO and a multi-user evaluation license of BEA WebLogic Server available now from the BEA Web site at http://www.beasys.com/linux/.
The promotion gives developers a jump-start in building distributed applications on Linux and includes 60 days of free technical support. In addition, all partners in the BEA enterprise developer program will have access to free evaluation copies of BEA TUXEDO and BEA WebLogic Server for Linux.
"Linux developers can now take advantage of all the benefits of BEA`s mission-critical computing environments and seamlessly interface applications across the more than 50 platforms that BEA supports," said Paul McNamara, vice president of business development for Durham, N.C.-based Red Hat Software, Inc., the market-leading Linux developer and service provider. "BEA is breaking new ground in broadening the acceptance of Linux as a legitimate alternative to traditional operating systems in the enterprise."
"One of the things holding Linux back as an operating environment for enterprise applications was the lack of software to help ensure a high availability and a development platform that is compatible with other environments in the organization," said Dan Kusnetzky, program director for operating environments and serverware research at International Data Corporation, an industry analysis firm based in Farmingham, Mass. "The announcement of BEA TUXEDO and BEA WebLogic Server for Linux enable organizations to attack both of those issues."
According to market research firm International Data Corp. (IDC), Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment in 1998, growing more than 190 percent in that year alone and capturing more than 17 percent of all server operating system shipments.
"This announcement demonstrates the importance BEA places on being responsive to the Linux developer community which we estimate to total more than 10 million worldwide. Supporting Linux to enable the deployment of portable, enterprise-class applications is an important component of our overall efforts to help make it easier for developers to build and deploy reliable applications," said Alfred Chuang, president of WebXpress, a BEA company. "BEA TUXEDO and BEA WebLogic Server help enhance the robustness of Linux by leveraging BEA`s market-leading technology, which has been proven by more than 3,000 enterprise customers worldwide."
Industry Leaders Applaud BEA`s Support for Linux
"Intel Architecture is the server foundation of choice for e-business, primarily because companies like BEA are delivering high-powered application and transaction server solutions based on Intel Architecture," said Bill Raleigh, director of marketing for Intel`s Enterprise Server Group. "BEA and Intel are also working together to optimize the performance of BEA TUXEDO transaction monitor and BEA WebLogic Server running on Intel Pentium (R) III Xeon (TM) processor-based servers, giving users maximum value in addition to enterprise robustness and functionality."
"We view Linux as an important platform for application servers and Internet deployment. As part of our open systems strategy for VisualCafe ENTERPRISE SUITE, we support Linux as a deployment and debugging platform for our Single-View technology," said Mansour Safai, vice president of Internet tools for Symantec. "BEA`s support for Linux is a critical step towards moving Linux into the mainstream, which benefits many of our customers."
"BEA TUXEDO has helped Topica to build one of the most scalable email list services on the Internet," said Glenn Marcus, vice president of engineering for Topica Inc. "BEA`s support for Linux can contribute to the cost-effective development of Topica`s leading free email list service, and is designed to allow us to better leverage the open source initiative."
