Benefits of packaged analytics

By Wayne Brider
Johannesburg, 20 Sept 2004

Packaged analytics, such as business intelligence (BI) solutions for vertical markets, offer a number of benefits to organisations wishing to embark on enterprise-wide BI implementations.

"Packaged analytics provide intellectual property around vertical markets such as telecommunications or retail, giving organisations a starting point for tackling the complexities of BI," says Wayne Brider, head of the BI Division of EOH KPMG Consulting.

"No package will be a 100% fit to the business - that is not the intent. A level of customisation, for example with regard to local regulations, tax or laws, will always be required. But it will give the organisation a fast start."

Brider says that another benefit is that many organisations introduced ERP systems which were not designed with BI in mind, but for operational efficiency.

"Using a packaged analytical solution, like SAS Banking Intelligence Solution, organisations know exactly what data is required for the business intelligence solution and can reverse-engineer to ensure they obtain all the necessary data," he says.

In addition, business benefits are realised quicker with packaged analytics as subsequent increments are already catered for.

"There is no need for businesses to take risks in implementing business intelligence, as packaged analytics enable them to implement best practice that re-uses previous learning," says Brider. "Safe in the knowledge that they are implementing best practice frees them to focus on the all-important people issues."

"Often when organisations within certain sectors implement business intelligence without a model, they end up with an implementation that does not fit best practices," he concludes.
