Benguela rebranded, offering revealed
Benguela, the start-up created by two of Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud engineers, has moved out of its stealthy operations and rebranded itself as Nimbula, says ChannelWeb.
The technology, Nimbula Director, is a cloud computing operating system that manages both on-premise and off-premise cloud IT resources on customer-controlled infrastructure.
CEO and co-founder Chris Pinkham says Nimbula's goal is to meet the need for flexible infrastructure in private clouds that requires no manual installation. "The only thing we're asking you to do is assemble the hardware and we'll do the rest."
AMD unveils cloud processor
AMD is targeting its latest Opteron family of CPUs at cloud and hyper-scale computing environments, states eWeek.
The four- to six-core Opteron 4000 series is aimed at servers and workstations where there is a demand for performance, energy efficiency and low cost. This comes as more attention is being paid to the system demands for cloud and scale-out computing businesses like Amazon and Google.
“This new family of processors is very focused on energy efficiency and cost,” says Gina Longoria, director of product management at AMD's server and workstation division. “We see the cloud sector of the server market growing much faster than the market rate.”
Cisco intros fabric-based computing in India
Cisco has introduced a fabric-based cloud computing architecture for a data centre in India, reports All India Today.
Fabric computing enables a 'wire-once' deployment model where new components are installed once with no need for changing configurations. The company states that simplifying the cabling structure and I/O can reduce capital expenses by 30% and operational expenses by 40%.
Pramodh Menon, senior VP of Cisco India and SAARC, says: “At Cisco, we aim to bring together network, compute and virtualisation technologies into one unified system. We are confident of revolutionising data centre management by offering flexibility and taking advantage of the role that the network plays in addressing key aspects such as security, scalability and interoperability.”
