BenQ announces latest DVD rewriter DW1620

Johannesburg, 06 Oct 2004

Networking lifestyle device specialist, BenQ, has announced the availability of the latest in its range of DVD rewriters - the DW1620.

"The unit`s 16x recording capability allows users to record a full 4.57GB DVD disc in just under six minutes," says Manish Bakshi, general manager, Middle East and Africa at BenQ.

The DW1620 is one of the first DVD rewriters in its class to offer double-layer technology offering faster recording times, increased storage capacity and an enhanced level of convenience for the end-user. In addition to a faster recording speed, the DVD rewriter can burn select x DVD+R media at 16x with double layer at 2.4x.

"As writing speed is increased, signal loss becomes the key cause of a significant decrease in writing quality," says Bakshi. "However, BenQ`s High-Speed Signal Algorithm manages the high EFM (Eight-to-Fourteen Modulation) frequency signal loss that often takes place at high-speed writing - ensuring superb writing quality."

Unlike other drives which precept the writing power before the actual writing of data, the WOPC II (Walking Optimal Power Control) algorithm evaluates the writing quality constantly and adjusts the writing power accordingly in order to ensure the best possible writing quality over the entire disc.

The BLER OPC (Block Error Rate Optimal Power Control) further enhances the writing quality near the end of the disc, where the risk of warping is higher.

Bakshi says optimal reading and writing quality is obtained when the angle between the disc and the laser beam is 90 degrees. "However, if a disc is warped, the laser beam many no longer be correctly positioned. The DW1620 incorporates Tilt Control, which repositions the OPU (Optical Pickup Unit) to maintain the 90-degree angle between the disc and the laser beam in order to ensure the best writing quality."
