BI Planning Services strikes BI deal with GPNet

Johannesburg, 04 Dec 2002

Planning Services is to implement a full warehousing and solution for GPNet Managed Healthcare. The deal comes during a time of massive growth and data volumes on the GPNet doctors` network.

GPNet receives and manages prescription data from over 2 500 general practitioners in active private practice, from which elements of information are supplied to the pharmaceutical and health funder industries. GPNet`s business has also expanded further into the clinical and health risk analysis. In excess of 1.2 million scripts per month are processed by GPNet on its network.

BI Planning Services is already beyond the initial stages of data warehouse restructuring for GPNet, which includes additional data marts, and cubes from existing and new sources. These modifications will benefit the current PBR, peer review, capitation and FFS programmes. The diagnosis (ICD10), medical scheme, electronic scripting, online data submission and international standards will also be incorporated into the new data sets.

Says Craig Hart, Technical Director at BI Planning Services: "We will remodel the entire data warehouse enabling GPNet to receive information from multiple sources as well as to do a triple collation of location. This is a 'first` in the health industry."

BI Planning Services will also implement Ascential`s ETL solution, which allows for extraction, transformation and loading of data. DataStage extracts and loads the metadata into the operational data store while Cognos software handles the front-end of the solution package. Individual data marts will be installed for GPNet customers including the regional support structure for the network.

The Cognos software with PowerPlay Transformation Server will be installed to allow GPNet to draw up multidimensional reports. Cognos reporting tools include Impromptu Client and Server for internal and external reporting and Impromptu Web Reports. Cognos Query is a Web-based querying tool used mainly in the data marts.

This data warehouse concept is both Internet and intranet user-friendly. It encompasses internal and external portals, which allow online access between GPNet and its clients. The entire project plan runs over three years and includes implementation, switch over into the new data warehouse and the introduction of the BI system. The initial stage of the project will be complete by February 2003, the second phase will run until July 2003, while the maintenance phase will be conducted on a continuous basis.

This deal follows shortly after BI Planning Services was awarded the 'Implementation of the Year` award at Cognos Enterprise 2002 for the implementation of Cognos at Anglo Coal.

"The value of this approach is borne out by the fact that, to date, BI Planning Services can boast a 100% success record in data warehousing implementations," concludes Hart.
