To discover the current status of business intelligence (BI) adoption in companies, ITWeb, in partnership with Microsoft, has opened the ITWeb-Microsoft Business Intelligence Survey 2011.

Considering the array of BI platforms on offer, the study also aims to understand the most popular offerings and the advantages they bring.

Among its several advantages, BI is frequently touted as a cost-cutting solution for businesses. The survey asks companies about the benefits they get from the solution.

It also attempts to measure the level of investments that organisations dedicate to BI, and whether there is any ROI.

In addition, the survey aims to unpack the primary value determined from an organisation's BI implementation. A lot has been said about benefits in terms of reporting, analysing, monitoring and prediction, and the survey aims to bring these issues to light.

There are also several challenges associated with the implementation of BI. These range from costs to data irregularities. With this in mind, the study aims to explore the major barriers and trends companies face in their BI initiatives.

The survey also questions the respondents about their businesses providing standard scorecards and key performance indicators across the organisation.

With different technologies at organisations' disposal, the study aims to determine where users want to receive BI information; whether it is on corporate dashboards, Excel spreadsheets, Web reports, PDAs, phones or other devices.

Organisations that respond will reveal what they regard as the technology component most fundamental to the success of their BI implementation.
