Bid-or-buy CEO Jaco Jonker says the company chose Kenya because the environment is less restrictive than the rest of Africa. The country's Internet penetration is four million users - almost on par with SA's, being just under five million - and the population is, by and large, tech savvy.
The Kenyan portal is currently operating out of SA, but, if all goes according to plan, Jonker says Bid-or-buy will appoint a manager in Kenya to set up and run a local office next year.
Bid-or-buy, which allows users to purchase and sell goods online, generates a turnover of over R30 million per month. It is one of SA's top Web sites, according to the company, with 30 million monthly page views and one million unique visitors per month. The site has 70 000 sellers and 530 000 registered users in total.
“As a leader in e-commerce in SA, we are hoping that, with the launch of Bid-or-buy Kenya, we are doing our bit to grow the uptake of online shopping in the East African country,” says Jonker.
