The degree to which commerce, industry and other organisations have become dependent upon electronic data is demonstrated by steadily increasing demand for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solutions to protect data centres.
UPS systems to protect four major data centres are being designed and installed by Square One Power Solutions, the UPS specialist in the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group, for a combined value of more than R1 million. The units have a total power rating of 380kW.
The systems are for fashion house Foschini at its Cape Town headquarters, petroleum and oil giant Engen at its Parktown head office in Johannesburg, digital storage systems specialist Africa Indigo at Rivonia and the University of Botswana in Gaberone.
In each case, Square One Power has based its power supply and protection solution on APC Silcon UPS equipment that offers three-phase online power protection and ensures high security of power supply.
"The output design caters for modern downstream loads and conforms to new standards that require such loads to be power factor (PF) corrected," says Square One Power Solutions managing director Neill Schreiber.
"The APC Silcon units are also able to function over wide voltage and frequency ranges. They are compact, small footprint products that have unity input PF and work at 97% efficiency with less than 5% input harmonic distortion. The units handle crest factors of up to 10 to 1 as well as overloads of 200%. Due to the inherent high specification, the units are diesel generator set-friendly and exceptionally cost-efficient."
