Biodata IT introduces proactive content filtering

CyberGuard`s Webwasher to thwart `Day Zero` attacks
By Biodata
Johannesburg, 15 Aug 2005

Unlike traditional anti-virus technology that must first identify new viruses and worms before developing protection and releasing it to customers, Webwasher`s proactive content filtering identifies anomalies so that users can prevent infiltration from new worms and viruses in the first place. Security researchers often refer to the initial release of this threat as a "Day Zero" attack.

Proactive content filtering technology is not intended to replace conventional anti-virus technology, but to complement it and maximise protection and performance. The proactive scanner does not need to look for a known virus that can be caught faster by a pattern-based scanner. Cyberguard`s Webwasher product delivers higher performance than companies that offer behavioural filtering using a technique that emulates actual code, referred to as "sandboxing".

Chris Runte of Biodata IT, local distributor of Cyberguard, explains: "This proactive content filtering uses a combination of unique new algorithms to achieve up to 10 times higher detection rates than those provided by behaviour-based solutions, and with substantially fewer false positives."

Webwasher`s integrated content security suite is unique in that it offers best-of-breed point solutions (URL blocker, anti-spam, anti-virus, etc), and at the same time an integrated architecture approach that makes for smooth system growth.

When the Webwasher solution is installed, it is a single binary once. Thereafter the individual solutions, such as Web filtering, e-mail filtering, anti-virus, IM filtering, etc, can be activated when needed - simply via licence key.

The products in the Webwasher suite profit from one another. For example, when the anti-virus solution is activated, this can be applied to both e-mail and Web content.

Policy settings once defined for one product, automatically apply to the next.

"This is what is meant by an integrated suite," adds Runte, "it doesn`t get easier than that."

Webwasher includes URL filtering, anti-spam, anti-virus, content filtering, SSL scanning, instant message filtering and enterprise Web reporting. The solution can be applied with all protocols HTTP, FTP, SMTP and HTTPS and on all major platforms: Windows, Linux and Solaris.
