IT security specialist Biodata IT South Africa has implemented in various local government departments and corporate companies technology that renders notebooks and PCs useless when they fall into the wrong hands. Its partner, Utimaco in Germany, has developed Safeguard Easy, software that encrypts the hard drive of notebooks or PCs, rendering them useless to anyone without authorised access.
"Sensitive information on laptops and workstations needs secure protection as data theft is on the increase worldwide. Thieves are well aware that the contents they can retrieve and sell to a competitor is a much better business than trying to make a profit with stolen hardware," explains Christian Runte, director at Biodata IT.
SafeGuard Easy is simple to install and operates transparently in the background. Boot protection, pre-boot user authentication and hard disk encryption using powerful algorithms guarantee against unauthorised access and hacker attacks. Unauthorised individuals cannot access the system because pre-boot authentication requires the authentication of the user before the operating system is started.
Pre-boot authentication cannot be manipulated and therefore stands for maximum security. Many other protection programs are not effective because they permit the readout of keys or passwords from the hard disk. SafeGuard Easy prevents this by generating the code key required for boot-up from the typed password. Even hard disk analysis tools become ineffective against SafeGuard Easy.
"There is a huge demand for software with the capability to protect this environment. The South African market, like many others around the world, is plagued by theft of IT infrastructure. Utimaco Safeware guarantees comprehensive and permanent protection of data through using modern encryption algorithms considered secure by experts. More than two million computers worldwide secured with Safeguard Easy speak for themselves and this is one of the reasons why Utimaco were appointed exclusive provider of the Finnish government for PC and notebook security," says Runte.
Ensuring that content is protected on a network is one thing, but what happens if an employee works with corporate data outside of the office and something happens. The risk is then out of the control of the administrators, there is nothing that can be done to avoid any malicious intrusion or damage to intellectual property.
In the event of a laptop, notebook or handheld being stolen or lost, users can rest assured that if they have implemented Safeguard Easy, they have lost the device but what`s in it, is safeguarded.
