A great mind once said: “Security is the chief enemy of mortals.” Before we tell you who said this, and why it is relevant, we'd like to take a few minutes to introduce our company to you.
Bitrate is a niche player in the IT security space, specialising in the sourcing of enterprise-class IT security solutions for the modern-day enterprise. We'd like to invite you to come view our stand at the ITWeb Security Summit, where we will be showcasing a number of relevant security solutions.
Bitrate has secured sole distributor rights for a number of real-world-ready, next-generation security products, through which we aim to create market awareness of the existing, yet inchoate, understanding of the problems inherent in 21st century enterprise IT security. Our knowledgeable product evangelists will be on hand to provide 'proof in the pudding' demonstrations of the various products, as well as to provide insight into IT security-related concerns.
The theme for this year's Security Summit is as apt as it could be. “Reinventing information security: When trusted technologies have failed”. This is relevant to current-day market trends, as it places focus on the need for new and best-of-breed solutions to counter legacy security issues that have only in recent times become visible to companies that have not yet adapted to the ever-changing IT security threat landscape.
Larger companies that have identified the need to keep up have been left with the sombre realisation that there are very few products available in the market today that address all of these issues. Much less address new issues such as device sprawl resulting from attempts to safeguard enterprise perimeters with more and more hardware.
Have trusted technologies failed? Well, yes and no.
Yes because, as we move even further into a Web-centric business model from an operational perspective, we see that R&D teams have not kept up security innovation at the same pace as every other non-security-related IT technology that has surfaced in the last 15 years.
In a sense then, one should also be gentle in our damning of our antiquated technology and say no, it hasn't failed us completely. There was a time that the almost paranoid need for network security was limited, and as such, the security tools of that time served quite well.

Being paranoid over security is a necessary evil in our age, which brings us neatly back to our opening statement, where we pointed out that a great mind once made mention of the fact that security is the chief enemy of mortals. If the name Shakespeare came to mind, then you would be correct in your thinking. How is this relevant? Well, as much as this enemy is relevant to the average person, the same enemy applies to organisations. It is through this enemy that we grow to understand our own requirements as people and as organisations. The brave few attempt to solve the riddles brought forth by said requirements and it's exactly within this paradigm that Bitrate exists to advise enterprise IT on the array of next-generation solutions available to cultivate and to nurture peace of mind.
Of the number of IT security and test solutions offered by Bitrate, the ones we will be showcasing at our stand (#24) this year are Palo Alto Networks, AirMagnet, and VSS Monitoring.
ITWeb's 7th annual Security Summit, taking place from 15 to 17 May, at the Sandton Convention Centre, is tailored to address the current IT security concerns of SA's CISOs and strategic decision-makers. The 2012 Summit features two days' of informative sessions presented by leading international and local security experts, and a full day of interactive workshops. For the first time, SANS Institute training will be in SA and is brought to you alongside the Security Summit programme. You will be able to assess and compare new tools and services within the IT security space at the Security Summit exhibition. Equip yourself with the latest IT solutions, and benefit from commentary on new trends and threats, which may inform your security strategy.
