The BlackBerry Jam Africa and Middle East tour is on its way to SA next month, giving local developers a chance to work hands-on with the range of development tools available for the BlackBerry platform.
The BlackBerry Jam (formerly DevCon) sessions - set to take place in Durban, on 15 July, Cape Town, on 16 July and Johannesburg, on 18 July - are set to focus on the new direction the smartphone maker is taking with its 10 OS platform.
The events form part of a series of sessions for developers in Africa and the Middle East that aim to provide new skills, support the development of locally-relevant content, and give aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to reach a local and global BlackBerry audience.
BlackBerry says the developer events will provide attendees with the latest resources, training and best practices for creating BlackBerry 10 apps.
The sessions are open to all developers, but are also designed for people who are new to the BlackBerry 10 platform, or want to learn the basics about app development.
BlackBerry technical experts will be on hand at all Jam sessions to answer any questions developers may have, and to impart the latest best practice from the company.
Training will focus on the BlackBerry Cascades software development kit and WebWorks HTML5 development tools. "The Cascade framework enables developers to develop visually-engaging native applications for BlackBerry 10, while WebWorks makes it simple to take advantage of standard Web technologies like CSS, HTML5, and JavaScript to build apps," says BlackBerry.
On conclusion of the tour, the app deemed by BlackBerry judges to be the best developed will be awarded the best app title, with $10 000 going to the developer.
While there is no registration fee for attending the Jam sessions, BlackBerry advises interested parties to register ahead of time as space is limited.
