It has been about three months since BlackBerry unveiled its new re-engineered 10 OS platform and the Canadian company has announced the arrival of its third BlackBerry 10 device, with three more expected before the end of the year.

First there was the all-touch Z10, then the hybrid touch/Qwerty Q10 and now BlackBerry has unveiled the Q5 - another hybrid smartphone featuring a touchscreen and the company's iconic keyboard - but for price-conscious consumers.

Designed for emerging markets, the Q5 will launch around the world within the next three months, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said this morning. According to a BlackBerry blog, SA could see the phone as early as July.

Heins was hesitant to divulge pricing details just yet, but said the Q5 will be an affordable alternative to its two high-end counterparts, ideal for people in emerging markets who have never owned personal computers or laptops.

Comprehensive details are still sketchy, but further specs and images are set to be released by BlackBerry soon. What was revealed in the brief unveiling today, was that the Q5 will come in four colours - black, white, red and pink.

The Q5 looks similar to the recently unveiled Q10 device, but features a keyboard more akin to BlackBerry's older Curve devices, with separate keys as opposed to single panel bevelled keys. The touchscreen display is 3.1 inches, the same as that of the Q10. The Q5 will come with BlackBerry's updated 10.1 software - in-built in the Q10 and, as of today, available on the Z10.
