Blu-Ray experiences Java problems

Blu-Ray's Java-based interactivity layer was touted as having superior interactivity capabilities, although this is not the case, says Ultimate AV.

Most standalone Blu-Ray players don't have Ethernet ports and none are equipped to handle picture-in-picture interactivity, including recent second generation players.

Also, recent Java-enhanced Blu-Ray titles, such as the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, required firmware updates for many standalone players to even play the discs.

Public review for Java 7 complete

The public review period for JSR-275, "Measures and Units" Early Draft, ended on 8 July, according to Slashdot.

The JSR-275 will be an enhancement for Java 7 by providing "strong" typing (through class parameterisation) and easy internationalisation of Java programs, preventing conversion errors.

The latest version 0.8 is available as a PDF. The reference implementation is provided by the JScience project under a BSD license.

OpenJDK releases open source module

The OpenJDK project has released an early access source code snapshot of implementations of the Java Module System (JSR 277) and Improved Modularity Support (JSR 294), says Enterprise Open Source.

JSR 277 addresses modularity from a deployment unit perspective, addressing distribution format, versioning, dependencies, repositories, runtime, and support tools necessary for modules.

JSR 294 addresses it from a development perspective, introducing a new language construct, called "super-packages", for information hiding.
