Applications based on the classic IBM datastream model remain surprisingly persistent in today's Web services world.
With GT Software's Ivory VisualConnect, Blue Turtle Technologies is able to expose classic 3270 and 5250 applications and callable CICS transactions to Web services, changing their interface without modifying the actual applications.
VisualConnect has its own backend that ties into GT Software's other Ivory family tools to complete the company's modernisation offerings.
Geoff Hardwick, Business Development Manager at Blue Turtle, explained that VisualConnect reduced the work needed to build a Web front-end, noting that "it is all configurations, not code generation. You don't have to be a Java programmer," said Hardwick.
VisualConnect is sold in conjunction with Ivory Services Architect and Ivory Data Access, two programmatic solutions that expose mainframe transactions and modify code to build something new, rather than just revisualising applications. "It is the simplicity of GT Software's solution that gives us a competitive-edge in the market," continued Hardwick.
VisualConnect can run natively on a zSeries mainframe or reside within Windows, Unix or multitier Linux environments.
