BMC extends e-commerce capabilities through acquisition of Evity

Johannesburg, 22 May 2000

BMC , the second largest systems management vendor in the world, represented locally by CCH Enterprise Solutions, has announced a major strategic initiative to deliver comprehensive level management solutions for enterprise e-infrastructure.

To accelerate this initiative, BMC has acquired management provider Evity Inc.

Evity`s SiteAngel 2000 website management service allows all engaged in e-commerce to monitor the performance of critical path transactions through websites, such as buying a book or tracking a transaction through a trade exchange, and to measure that performance against pre-set targets.

The centrepiece of this e-vailability initiative is the combination of comprehensive end-user experience monitoring with BMC`s Patrol application service management.

BMC now becomes the first company to combine service level reporting from inside the data centre and from outside the firewall on the Internet. This provides a comprehensive view of application service. When customers detect that a targeted service level for an application or a given critical path transaction is not being met, they will use Patrol to diagnose and correct the root problem at its source.

"An e-business website runs on many components from many different vendors: operating systems, databases, middleware, Internet and Web application servers, firewalls, and ultimately the application itself," says Reg Swart, BMC product manager at CCH Enterprise Solutions. "BMC supports them all and Evity brings a new dimension to these capabilities."

Gartner analyst Stephen Elliot says: "Internet infrastructure services that monitor e-business performance is a massive market opportunity. Service providers must recognise that increasing customer visibility into the technical infrastructure will improve customer loyalty and provide a competitive advantage. Internet management functionality is the next step in fulfilling a hardened e-business strategy."

The Evity SiteAngel 2000 is an online service that monitors the performance and availability of static and dynamic Web pages to simulate the true end-user experience at an e-business web site. SiteAngel 2000 can record, playback and re-record a multi-step Web transaction from within a Web browser without requiring the user to install any software. SiteAngel 2000 excels at ease of use, and no programming or scripting is required.

Industry reaction to BMC`s announcement has been positive. "More and more companies, regardless of size, are relying on the Internet to grow their business," says Keith McAuliffe, VP, Compaq. "This announcement from BMC Software goes far beyond just growing customers` business. The ability to take an in-depth look at the end-user experience and to take steps to improve it, makes BMC an important partner in Compaq`s goal of delivering mission-critical non-stop e-business solutions."

"As Internet applications become more critical, businesses need a reliable way to analyse, monitor and improve availability," says Reed Hornberger, director, market development, Sun Microsystems. "BMC Software offers the right combination of products and services companies require to manage Internet businesses 24x365."
