BMC gets into fast lane

Johannesburg, 03 Nov 2005

Toyota Motorsport says it has aligned its business objectives with IT, following the adoption of BMC `s Business Management (BSM) , in a bid to achieve long-term success in Formula 1 racing.

The company introduced an IT management strategy to provide an overview of the separate business systems on which its day-to-day operations depend, Toyota Motorsport senior IT manager Waldemar Klemm told ITWeb during a visit to SA.

The partnership between the enterprise management solutions provider and Toyota Motorsport was concluded at the beginning of this year.

Thus, the team relies on BMC Software`s BSM strategy to maintain its commercial advantage off-track, focusing on the implementation of the BMC Atrium Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and the solutions that leverage the BMC Atrium CMDB.

Klemm says the solution allows Toyota to fine-tune its F1 manufacturing and reduce the time it takes from concept to track, while also allowing the group to understand and predict how technology impacts the business and how business impacts the IT infrastructure.

The Toyota team, he said, is one of two F1 teams to undertake the entire end-to-end design and manufacturing process in-house, meaning it has to have all processes in place to build or modify a complete car within a short space of time.

He noted that, compared to the usual seven years it often takes manufacturers to bring a new car to market, Toyota`s F1 team does the same process, from engine design and development to wind tunnel chassis research, construction and testing, in a week during the racing season.

Klemm commented that the implementation of the BSM strategy has also reduced the team`s PC, notebook and workstations by up to 20%, and has also led to a 15% saving on server costs by identifying unnecessary resources.

In addition, the team has experienced no SAP downtime since implementing BSM, compared to eight hours` downtime during the pervious year, he said.

The partnership with BMC Software has allowed Panasonic Toyota Racing to set up a process-driven and automated monitoring system, Klemm stated. He added that it has enabled the team to achieve efficiency with moderate resources, ultimately making the outfit more competitive.
