The evolution of technology and business requirements will ensure complex multi-platform environments that require heterogeneous management solutions.
This is according to Peter Armstrong, corporate strategist at BMC Software, speaking at the company`s annual forum that took place at Vodaworld last week.
In his presentation, "The business service management vision", he said IT exists to make the business perform and should provide business with intelligent solutions that adhere to its needs.
Armstrong used an analogy of a vehicle dashboard: "We do not need a petrol gauge that tells us how full our tank is, but rather something that lets us know how much further we can drive and whether we will make it to work in the morning." The gadgets themselves are meaningless; it is the relevant information that is important, he added.
In discussing the relationship between COBIT and ITIL, he explained that ITIL tells a business what to do and COBIT is the control on top of ITIL that ensures things are being done properly.
Arjen Wiersma, country manager of BMC Software for sub-Saharan Africa, said business service management (BSM) entails bringing the business, its people, and the IT systems they depend on together in a harmonious way. "It combines best practice IT processes, such as support for ITIL and COBIT, with automated technology management and a shared view of how IT resources directly support the business.
"If something happens within a company - an accident, event or system failure - the first issue to be addressed is how that incident relates to the business today. You need to understand the financial as well as production implications of the event, and that is what BSM helps you do," he added.
Roy Blume, IT services research manager at BMI-TechKnowledge, said business wants solutions to business problems, and choosing the right system for a business is imperative. Business strategy will increasingly dictate IT spend, he added.
