Of the 'big four' vendors in the IT management software market, BMC is a visionary and thought leader when it comes to business service management (BSM) and the configuration management database (CMDB).
This is the view of Forrester Research, which has just released its Q4 2006 SWOT analysis report on BMC Software.
According to Forrester, BMC Software offers the "strongest BSM / CMDB story for enterprise IT - delivering an integrated solution for the entire enterprise, incorporating mainframe and distributed systems.
"Historically, BMC is the No. 1 in application management; it is now emerging as a leader in IT service management / service desk and BSM."
BMC Software country manager Arjen Wiersma says that, according to Forrester, "BMC now has the opportunity to become a strategic vendor for enterprise customers, combine the value of BSM with business process management, and deliver integrated data centre optimisation solutions."
Forrester foresees BMC's "continued CMDB leadership with the release of BMC Atrium CMDB 2.0 - demonstrating the ability to successfully integrate acquired technology with organically built, in-house technological innovations".
It also points to BMC's strategic relationship with IDS Scheer and Oracle for enabling integration of business processes with BSM, and highlights the opportunity in the management of new technology stacks - such as virtualised infrastructure and software-oriented architecture (SOA).
Forrester points out that BMC could be the IT management partner of choice for service providers, who are playing an increasingly important role in IT management. "BMC products are well-tuned to the service provider business model," says the report.
"Increasing recognition of BMC Software's leadership position in BSM has encouraged us to broaden our footprint across South Africa and the sub-continent," says Wiersma. "We have expanded the local office and increased the number of channel partners so as to provide the necessary support infrastructure in delivering on the BSM promise."
