While many businesses were sceptical at first, wireless networking has recently seen a surge in hardware sales, with a more welcoming view of the relatively new technology being adopted by users. As such, concerns surrounding security and initial costs have been replaced with appreciation for the convenience and ease of use provided by wireless solutions.
"According to a survey by a top international statistics company, global shipments of wireless LAN equipment have increased by 20% this quarter," enthuses Traci Maynard, Acer business unit manager for Tarsus Technologies. "After a period of widespread apprehension in the market, this survey indicates that the advantages of the wireless approach to networking are now being realised and capitalised on."
Computer manufacturers are also starting to consider the demands for wireless solutions. "Acer includes wireless networking adapters as a standard in all their current notebook models, except for one," explains Maynard. "This allows customers to have out-of-the-box wireless capabilities and get connected to their wireless business or home network within seconds of unpacking their new notebook."
"Many studies show that the total global revenues for wireless networking equipment currently stands at over 760 million dollars this quarter. This relates to 12.2 million units shipped worldwide, with wireless switches making up a significant portion of the sales," she says.
Security was typically the biggest concern expressed by potential wireless customers. "The current wireless technologies, especially in the case of embedded wireless routers, make setting up of a secure wireless network simple for SOHO users - with encryption and MAC filtering ensuring a virtually impenetrable wireless network."
"Wireless technology currently allows standardised speeds of up to 54 megabits per second. This is steadily approaching the speeds of cable alternatives and computer manufacturers who are including wireless interfaces as standard with their systems. The future is indeed wireless," she concludes.
