Boost to wireless throughput with Netgear's new WiFi range extender

Johannesburg, 18 Aug 2010

A new WiFi range extender targeting the retail accessory and add-on market has been released by Duxbury Networking. The Netgear WN2000RPT is designed to complement the brand's existing router and DSL gateway offerings marketed through dealers and Internet service providers (ISPs).

“In a number of multi-storeyed homes and dwellings featuring concrete or metal frames, wireless coverage throughout the building is often impossible due to the nature of the architecture, which restricts signal propagation,” explains Andy Robb, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking.

The Netgear WN2000RPT resolves this problem. Working with existing wireless router and DSL gateways, it 'repeats' the signal it receives to extend and strengthen wireless coverage.”

Installation of the unit is simplified with the use of dynamic LED displays to help locate the best placement position for whole-home coverage.

It is supplied with four 4 10/100 Ethernet ports facilitating connections to home theatre and audiovisual devices such as Internet-connected TVs and game consoles.

“This is an ideal solution for users who receive contract-linked 'free' ISP gateway products offering less-than-ideal WiFi performance,” adds Robb.

He reports that in field testing, the Netgear WN2000RPT was able to extend the wireless coverage from the second to the fourth floor of a 600 square metre, stone-built house, improving throughput from 0mbps (no wireless connection) to 2mbps.

Key features of the Netgear WN2000RPT include:

* The elimination of WiFi dead spots by repeating the WiFi signal from existing wireless equipment.
* Universal compatibility with routers and gateways from Netgear and other vendors.
* Compatible with legacy wireless technology and security systems.
