Borland, Siemens Mobile advance wireless Java development

Johannesburg, 09 Nov 2001

Borland Software Corporation, a leading provider of e-business platform solutions, and Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (IC Mobile), a market leader in the worldwide mobile communications industry, today announced a non-exclusive agreement to advance the development of wireless applications for Java-enabled mobile phones.

As part of the agreement, Borland granted Siemens the right, free of charge, to distribute Borland JBuilder MobileSet, a Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) compliant environment, and Borland JBuilder Personal edition as part of an update to the Siemens Early Bird Developer Program. The Siemens Early Bird Developer Program offers a Java-based mobile phone and software development kit (SDK) to Siemens` online community.

"By including the Borland JBuilder product family as part of our Early Bird Developer Program, we are able to offer mobile developers a comprehensive and easy-to-use Java development environment to create next-generation applications," said Bernhard Geisberger, director software development tools, Siemens IC Mobile. "Siemens and Borland share a common vision of providing open, standards-based solutions that enable developers to create innovative products."

Developers can create highly customised mobile applications using JBuilder MobileSet and JBuilder Personal that support software development for the Siemens SL 45i k-Java enabled mobile phone. JBuilder MobileSet and JBuilder Personal provide a robust Java development environment that features visual design tools, device emulation and debugging. Developers can register for the Siemens Early Bird Program on the Siemens Mobile Developers Village Web site at: http://www.siemens-mobile.de/ (Developers Portal).

"We are pleased to work closely with Siemens, a strong player in the wireless market," said Tony de la Lama, vice president of Java solutions for Borland. "Our initiatives with Siemens further confirm the importance of providing best-in-class solutions to the growing community of mobile Java application developers -- a commitment both companies share." Today`s announcement underscores Borland`s intention to offer the JBuilder family of products to other manufacturers, enabling developers to standardise on one environment for the development and deployment of Java applications across devices from multiple manufacturers.
