GetSolutions, a local provider of Web-based technologies, has developed getIntranet, an "in the box" solution for small and medium enterprises that do not have the money for custom intranets.
The product is based on Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine - a free database, but one that allows only 25 concurrent users and has a space limitation of 2GB.
Penny Parbhoo, getSolutions development director, says the product does not currently offer integration with other collaborative technologies, but it will. "We are developing modules which will provide integration with, for example, MS Exchange. This will be on offer in two months for larger companies. Your calendar, contacts and so on will be viewable from the intranet or Outlook."
Parbhoo says the product provides the basic requirements companies have of an intranet. The higher-end collaborative integration is for larger enterprises.
Companies most often use intranet for telephone lists, document management, online leave forms, updating of personal details, messaging, content management, contact management and search. For the basic features of this product, Parbhoo says it was benchmarked against best-in-class overseas products. For more information, go here.
Getting to the heart of the product`s value, Parbhoo explains that almost every Fortune 500 company has an intranet. Smaller companies balk at the expensive development, hence the need for a ready-made solution.
GetIntranet, she claims, is easy to install and configure, has features that "every intranet should have", requires no programming skills, provides role-based views and management rights, and can be used in any organisation, bearing in mind the concurrent usage limits and database constraints.
