Businesses need the right tools and skills in order to analyse their processes, according to Mark McGregor, process performance author, coach and mentor.
McGregor spoke on the need to develop a clear business vision during this week's ITWeb BPM Summit held at Montecasino.
“If we don't know what the business purpose is we can't question whether the strategy will be executed and whether the strategy is fit for the business purpose.”
McGregor said most organisations don't analyse their business processes, which is a fundamental building block in order to achieve operations efficiency and business success. “If we haven't even learnt how to walk, how can we possible learn to run?”
He emphasised the importance for companies to use business process modelling and mapping tools to gain insight into their business processes.
Toby Sumpter, consultant for the Salamander Organisation, provided an overview of the role that service-oriented architecture (SOA) plays in delivering automated business processes.
Sumpter said: “Services are nothing more than the application of good programming principles. Service data taxonomies and business information taxonomies need to be mapped. SOA is not an easy option as not many services exist so they must be created. SOA is a long-term solution which must be started now if it is to deliver the benefits.”
He added that companies should avoid re-inventing the wheel, and that SOA expresses the business rules that the service runs by. “Agility comes from having a base of knowledge. BPM is critical in terms of getting SOA up and running.”
