Castle Lager SA yesterday celebrated National Braai Day with the launch of its very tongue-in-cheek BraaiNation app.

The company claims the app effectively transforms Apple or "Mandroid" smartphones into "BraaiPhones".

The app, which was designed to show displays of chops and T-bone and fillet steaks, includes a number of features, such as braai tips, recipes, a braai timer and a timer for cooling beers.

Castle Lager braai relations officer Jason Goliath says: "We've packed an amazing amount of innovation into this BraaiPhone and we think consumers are going to love the functionality that assists with the cooking of your meat and cooling of your beer."

In a video released by Castle, Goliath says the app "is weightless, like all the other apps", and is "tomorrow's braai today".

BraaiNation is not the first app to prove SA's passion for braaing. The Let's Braai app, by KS Digital Media, allows users to check the weather, find the nearest butchery, learn new braai techniques, and access braai recipes. An app in the Windows app store, called Steak Braai, allows users to braai steaks perfectly by taking into account the thickness of the meat, time on the grill, and how the braaier wants the meat done.

The Castle Lager BraaiNation app is available for free download from the Google Play and Apple App stores.
