ITWeb`s sister publication, Brainstorm magazine, and Neotel are promoting local artists, with the launch of the 2009 ITWeb Brainstorm calendar.

Each month of the calendar - from January 2009 to January 2010 - features the work of one of the 13 young, up and coming artists across different artistic disciplines, and offered various ICT companies the opportunity to invest in the development of the talented local youth.

Each artist was commissioned by a company to use their chosen medium to create a piece featuring the company`s branding, and judging of the various works was done at the calendar`s launch earlier this week.

The judges at the event were Hilton Dawson, founder of Picture This; Elise Blundell, enterprise marketing manager at Neotel; and Caryn Berman, business development director of ITWeb.

ITWeb photographers Suzanne Cantale and Karolina Komandera took six months to find and select the artists, which culminated in a public exhibition. Jack Morake, 32, walked away with the R25 000 first prize, sponsored by the platinum sponsor, Neotel.

His winning piece, a sculpture, was commissioned by Siemens.

"Our intention was to connect SA`s corporate world with yet-to-be-discovered talent who are producing their amazing work in modest workshops or even on the streets in our townships," says Berman.

The self-employed Morake, an artist from Pilgrims Rest, won the judges over with his depiction of the level of dedication that staff at Siemens have for good service delivery. The sculpture shows two men huddled over a Siemens workstation.

"I am truly grateful for this prize and it`s wonderful to see local artists being given such an opportunity to display their talent," said Morake.

The runner-up was Themba Malaza, a graphic designer who uses graffiti to help companies and advertisers convey their corporate message. He was awarded R5 000.
