Brokat sees strong future for SA mobile SMME market

Johannesburg, 17 Aug 2001

Brokat Technologies is a co-sponsor of the Southern African Entrepreneurship & Small Business Association (SAESBA) conference and is one of the leading global providers of user-centric software for electronic and mobile commerce.

The company entered the SA market this year and believes there is huge potential in the local mobile market.

Cliff van Tonder, SA country manager for Brokat Technologies, says there are many opportunities for small, micro and medium enterprise in the mobile industry. As a sign of Brokat`s commitment to the local industry, the company has partnered with 100% black-owned Thethani Universal Technologies, a local IT and telecommunications company, to boost both SMMEs and the local mobile market.

Troy Msimang, MD of Thethani, said: "We wanted to partner with a global company with a proven track record in the m-commerce industry because we see huge potential in SA mobile communications going forward. We looked at a range of companies but chose Brokat Technologies because of its strong reputation internationally and the quality of its products."

Msimang added that the SAESBA conference is vital in highlighting the role that SMMEs play in the mainstream economy. He said the conference will point out to " big business, foreign investors and governments that black economic empowerment in the SMME sector is not required as merely a gesture of goodwill but as an economic imperative".

He added that large local companies are not giving enough support to real black empowerment and the absorption of vital skills for the black unemployed.

He said: "The unemployed need fishing rods and not fish so that true empowerment can begin."

The result of this will expand the SA economy and bring new and dynamic innovations to the local market, he concluded.
