Dick Brummer, lead data and information architect for Telkom, will be the keynote speaker at the fourth Data Warehouse Forum run by business intelligence specialist Knowledge Integration Dynamics (KID). Brummer will speak on the importance of quality data in the delivery of data warehousing solutions, drawing on Telkom`s experience.
The forum will take place at the offices of Ascential Software in Rivonia at 3pm on 3 October.
"Businesses cannot function at their peak without clean and consistent data," says Brummer. "Data must be managed as a corporate asset to enable optimum operational reporting and deliver competitive advantage."
Brummer`s presentation will focus on the practicalities of implementing a data warehouse and on ways of overcoming some of the challenges, based on his experiences at Telkom.
Telkom has the largest data warehouse in South Africa and one of the largest in the world, weighing in at 18-plus Terabytes. It contains the company`s call, financial and customer records, including some summarised historical data. The data warehouse was developed for decision support and various operational reporting purposes, balanced scorecard, marketing and trend analysis, product review, customer account management, and various star schema and multidimensional designs for subject-specific data marts.
"We are maintaining a product-agnostic focus and looking at practical issues," says Paul van der Merwe, director at KID. "The forum has established itself as a place where people can exchange ideas and information and draw upon each other`s experiences, for the benefit of the industry as a whole."
