BSW-Telecoms, in partnership with Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), has been awarded a R 14-million contract for the provision of a telecommunications network management solution for Transtel.
Transtel is the telecommunications network and operator service provider to the 32 Transnet Group subsidiary companies.
Transtel operates the second-largest communications network in South Africa (next to Telkom SA) and one of the largest private voice networks in the southern hemisphere. Together they consist of 150 individual telephone and data networks that carry voice, data and radio traffic over satellite, microwave and cable media.
The TMN system is designed to increase operational efficiency throughout the network and assist in rationalising staff deployment. It will also optimise existing operational support systems.
The implementation features DEC`s (TeMIP) fault management system that will be customised and integrated by BSW into the new management platform.
"The solution tackles key network and customer service goals - such as improved network fault handling, enhanced management of the network operating infrastructure, improved monitoring of network performance and focused customer care and service management," says BSW Telecoms senior account manager, Bret Oberstein.
The first phase of the project includes the integration of Transtel`s existing network management systems and help desk functions into the new system. It is scheduled for completion in December 1998.
