BT introduces talking 3D e-mail

BT has unveiled Avtalk, the world`s first personal three-dimensional, talking e-mail software. The revolutionary technology, available from

www.bt.com/talkzone

and from

www.innovate.bt.com/avatar/

, will bring e-mail to life before user`s eyes, using avatar technology. Avtalk was launched at BTopenworld`s "Citizens of the Openworld" exhibition recently held in London.

Avtalk is a simple addition to e-mail programmes. When a new message arrives in the inbox, Avtalk recognises the sender and automatically selects that person`s designated avatar (their 3D virtual image). The text of the e-mail is then spoken to the user, by the talking head. It is also possible to send an e-mail with an avatar attached, which can be saved and then used to present the e-mail to the recipient. There are two default Avtalk personality options together with eight voice options that can be set to present each e-mail, in accordance with designated senders.

BT has developed Avtalk jointly with Televirtual and avatarme. The same three organisations were responsible for the development of avatar, the technology behind the highly acclaimed 3D attraction at the Talk Zone, sponsored by BT in the Millennium Dome in the UK. Over 200 000 visitors to the Talk Zone have participated in a simple, one minute body scan at the avatar booth, created their own 3D avatar and downloaded it from www.bt.com/talkzone. Avtalk technology can now also be downloaded, free of charge, from the same site.

Ian Gordon-Cumming, general manager for BT Southern Africa, says that Avtalk is the first step in creating the next generation of e-mail and will bring a lot of fun to those learning about the Internet. "BT has always believed

that avatar technology could revolutionise the way we all communicate. Avtalk is designed to provide entertainment to children as they learn about the Internet and e-mail. It is also a great way to communicate using an extra personal touch with those around the world and people with whom you are not in constant contact."
