Bytes Technology Networks (BTN), part of the Altron-owned Bytes Technology Group (BTG), which has been providing the University of Natal with the procurement of network related equipment and support services for the last four years, was awarded the R4 million contract to replace the ageing Layer 2 Cisco networking infrastructure with a new layer 3 Cisco 6509 switched network.
The new network will dramatically increase network capacity and will cater for future technologies such as e-learning, video streaming and mass data transfer and forms part of a recently introduced client care initiative by the university to provide students and staff access to the most up to date technologies and learning devices.
Said BTN East Coast`s Managing Director, John Taylor: "The IT industry is a highly competitive market sector in which to operate. To be selected as the networking partner for the design and implementation of the University of Natal`s new layer 3 Cisco switched network is extremely rewarding. At Bytes, we view the university as a long-term strategic business partner and are committed to further developing our relationship by adding value and participating in future IT related initiatives.
"It`s one of the biggest networks in KwaZulu-Natal linking more than 5 000 workstations across the eight campuses. It provides the 22 000 registered students with free internet access and e-mail capabilities making the high capacity network a key factor in functionality," says Taylor.
The new servers also allow remote users such as lecturers, staff members and field students reliable access to the network through Cisco`s RAS systems via analogue or ISDN lines and includes built-in security features using intrusion detection services.
Docrat said the partnership between the University, Bytes and Cisco was key to the success of this project. A healthy team effort was evident during workshops and design sessions. The business evolved as part of the university`s vision and strategic direction in which Bytes has been involved.
