BulkSMS.com is proud to have sponsored Larry Lessig, founder of Creative Commons and professor of law at Stanford University, as a speaker at the iCommons Bring 'n Braai digital culture event held in Cape Town on Friday, 20 April 2007.

"Our support of Larry Lessig and iCommons furthers the goal of promoting a creative culture and open access to the publishing of digital content or applications. Re-mixing music providing an innovative medium to demonstrate how open access to digital content enhances our cultural experiences," said Dr Pieter E Streicher, managing director of BulkSMS.com.

Larry Lessig spoke on the SA Free Culture Tour promoting how Creative Commons licences provide authors and artists with the freedom to copyright their creations with "some rights reserved".

Also on the platform was Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, who called for the uploading of content to Wikipedia in all official South African languages.

"BulkSMS.com is one of those rare companies that recognises how the innovative potential of the Net needs to be nurtured," said Heather Ford, executive director of iCommons. "The role of iCommons is to raise awareness around the power of open networks in facilitating innovation and to harness the power of creators and producers in producing creativity and knowledge for all."

The packed event saw Cape Town digerati, open source proponents, creatives, musicians and partygoers partake in an evening of re-mixing digital content by MC Whispa and Brazilian lucio-k as well the acoustic melodies of Cabins in the Forest and the eclectic sounds of Closet Snare.

"The Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory, Cape Town is known for supporting innovative cultural projects and the space lent itself well to the iCommons event. Our congratulations to Heather Ford and the iCommons team for organising a superb event," said Dr Streicher.
