Business Intelligence vendors forced to reconsider strategy in attempt to parallel Seagate Software`s EIM vision

Johannesburg, 30 Nov 1998
Seagate Software, the pioneer in Enterprise Information Management and a leader in Business Intelligence software, today welcomed Gartner Group`s endorsement of enterprise Business Intelligence suites as the future direction of the Business Intelligence market (Research Note: Introducing Hot New Segment: Enterprise Business Intelligence Suites, Howard Dresner, Gartner Group, October 7, 1998). Customers in this new market segment are demanding proven enterprise solutions, such as Seagate Crystal Info, which has been delivering enterprise scalability, usability and manageability since its inception in 1995.

The market shift identified in the Gartner Group research is forcing many vendors to re-package their product lines through creative marketing campaigns that attempt to brand query, reporting and OLAP point solutions as "enterprise suites." The greatest challenge for traditional Business Intelligence vendors, however, will be their ability to develop and deliver an infrastructure that truly integrates all of their products.

"Customers are demanding enterprise solutions, and the Business Intelligence industry is aligning itself with Seagate Software`s Enterprise Information Management vision in an attempt to mirror the success of our product suite," said Greg Kerfoot, chief executive officer at Seagate Software. "Our competitors understand the vision, but they clearly do not understand the complexities involved in developing and deploying a single integrated system to tens of thousands of users. Over the past four years, we have successfully worked through these complexities with our customers. We are fully aware of the pains our competitors will face when they realize thelimitations of their fragmented point solutions and then attempt to deploy them as enterprise-scalable Business Intelligence infrastructures."

Seagate Software has always believed that the true value of a Business Intelligence system designed to scale across the enterprise comes from its infrastructure. Seagate Crystal Info is currently entering its fourth generation of delivering proven enterprise scalable solutions to customers. The upcoming version of Seagate Crystal Info (code named Polaris) is expected to ship in CYQ498.

Seagate Crystal Info: Delivering Proven Enterprise Scalability Today The enterprise Business Intelligence suite market is predicted to mature by the second half of 1999. However, Seagate Software today remains unchallenged as the scalability leader in the Business Intelligence information delivery market. As a core component of its Enterprise Information Management strategy, Seagate Crystal Info`s unique and unequalled architecture continues to deliver unrivalled scalability to Seagate Software customers with successful enterprise implementations of over 10,000 seats; the top 50 customers each average over 2500 users on a single integrated system. Current large implementations include Pepsi, Bankers Trust, Aetna, Tektronix, and TCI.

Seagate Software`s product suite includes the leading query and reporting functionality of Seagate Crystal Reports, the pioneering OLAP technology of Seagate Holos, and the free availability of the Seagate Worksheet OLAP-client, all backed up by the tried and true enterprise delivery infrastructure of Seagate Crystal Info.
