Business Objects delivers business intelligence benefits to Handspring

WebIntelligence provides employees with access to heterogeneous operational data to drive down costs, improve ability to monitor fraudulent orders
Johannesburg, 22 Oct 2002

Handspring, the international provider of personal communications and handheld computers, has implemented WebIntelligence, the Internet-based business intelligence (BI) solution from Business Objects, to provide employees with online visibility into operational data across the entire organisation, significantly increasing operational efficiency while reducing unnecessary costs.

"WebIntelligence has made our job of identifying trends in fraudulent activity a whole lot easier," said Mike Paneitz, senior credit analyst at Handspring. "We are now able to get instant results with the streamlined data access. When we detect a pattern change with fraud activity, we can quickly adjust to new modus operandi, increasing the effectiveness of fraud analysis and more importantly fraud prevention at Handspring."

Since implementation of the BI solution, Handspring has achieved significant benefits, such as improving operational efficiency within the financial sector while monitoring product orders to detect fraudulent activity. Prior to using WebIntelligence, Handspring had difficultly in monitoring orders and identifying trends within the market due to scattered data and report backlogs, however, since implementation, Handspring`s credit analysts have easy access to data, enabling them to run ad hoc queries and reports.

Through utilising WebIntelligence, Handspring is now able to generate reports on items such as Web orders, bookings, billings, backlogs and shipping activities almost instantaneously. In addition, employees have direct access to consolidated data via the internet or Handspring`s Corporate intranet, enabling users to run their own queries and quickly perform analyses on the data that is important to them, increasing operational efficiency, improving insight into the business and reducing overall costs.

"Our company mission is to fundamentally change the way people organise, manage and communicate," said Bhaskar Sayyaparaju, director of information technology at Handspring, Inc. "By utilising business intelligence software from Business Objects, we are putting this philosophy into practice in our own operations. With WebIntelligence, we are better equipped to access and analyse the valuable data we collect from our manufacturing, e-commerce, finance, and customer relationship systems, thus improving our decision-making and reducing costs."
