Organisations that use file sync and share (FSS) are reported to prefer private cloud storage solutions over software-as-a-service (SaaS) alternatives.

This is according to an independent study about cloud storage usage in the enterprise, which was conducted by Research Now in collaboration with CTERA Networks, and involved 200 IT professionals.

Most of the respondents (63%) favour private cloud storage solutions over public offerings like Dropbox, according to the study.

The CTERA report found that 25% of organisations have implemented private cloud file sync and share tools, while 20% of organisations have implemented cloud storage gateways.

Moreover, 45% of organisations are considering private cloud file sync and share tools, while 38% of organisations are thinking about implementing cloud storage gateways.

is one of the major issues of using cloud storage solution; is vulnerable to hack attacks, and organisations are trying to find ways of using cloud storage while still maintaining control over who accesses their data. According to the report, most of these organisations want a completely private cloud or their own database for internal control of their data and private policies.

"Enterprises are seeking ways to capitalise on the benefits that cloud storage can provide, but not at the cost of losing control of their data," says Rani Osnat, VP of strategic marketing and customer experience at CTERA. "The market is flooded with SaaS offerings, but solutions that can scale on private and hybrid clouds are in short supply."

He adds that the research confirms organisations need a platform they can manage and run using the infrastructure of their choice, with both enterprise-grade and compelling end-user experience.

According to the report, 31% of the respondents have experienced corporate data leakage in 2013 because of employees sharing files over unauthorised fixed satellite services, 71% are concerned about data breaches.

To stop leakages, some employees have forbidden the use of SaaS-based file-sharing solutions. Some 55% of organisations with 30 000 employees or more expressly forbid the usage of SaaS-based file-sharing solutions.
