Bytes Technology Group, which is owned by JSE-listed Altron, has won a R400 million deal to maintain and support desktops for Absa's operations in SA and on the continent through its managed services unit.

Absa yesterday said the bid to acquire Barclays' operations in Africa, as well as its African regional office in SA, had been approved and these will be merged with Absa's Africa operations in an R18.2 billion deal.

The break-fix/installation, moves and change award includes the provision of desktop end-user computing services and support for more than 63 000 users throughout Africa, with SA representing the highest volume with 46 000 users across 1 351 local branches and various campus sites.

After phase one, which is in SA, the transition plan will expand to include 16 countries on the continent, including Botswana, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Bytes Technology Group CEO Rob Abraham says winning the contract is in line with its stated strategic approach to follow its customers into Africa. Bytes Managed Services (MS) MD Deidre le Hanie says the contract is "significant and prestigious".

Absa and Barclays Alpesh Patel says: "We look forward to a great partnership with Bytes MS in making our workplaces fully integrated. We want to make information technology accessible to our customers in their use of smartphones and social networks. The new applications have fundamentally changed the way that we do business.

"We want to empower our users and at the same time maintain the of the infrastructure."
