Bytes Technology Group has become the number one empowered ICT company in South Africa. The group has obtained an average BBBEE score of 90.98, giving it an average Level 2 on the DTI scorecard for 2010.
The Level 2 AAA with value-add BBBEE rating allows customers to claim 156.25% of their spend as Preferential Procurement.
Rob Abraham, CEO of Bytes Technology Group, notes that while the group completed an Empowerdex BBBEE verification exercise in 2009, which had been positive across the board for all Bytes companies, Empowerdex was requested earlier this year to complete a combined Bytes rating in addition to the normal company ratings.
This was done because the group realises the importance of the Codes of Good Practice scorecard for decision-makers in terms of enabling business leaders to report on BBBEE spend and initiatives and making decisions based on BBBEE criteria.
“Areas in which Bytes scored exceptionally well include ownership, skills development, preferential procurement, enterprise development, and socio-economic development,” notes Abraham. “We aim to focus on the management control element of the codes, in order to ensure that we build the skills and knowledge that will boost control of the business by black people. To this end, Bytes People Solutions has targeted 0.5% of each business unit's salary and wage bill to be spent on development and succession plans aimed at building a truly representative senior management team.
“Our achievement in transforming our group is not only attributable to our empowerment partnership with Kagiso, but also to other strategic initiatives such as our enterprise development and social investment strategies, as well as our moves to accelerate the development and sustainability of over 100 small black-owned enterprises,” Abraham says.
