PC Pro magazine has awarded CA Technologies' ARCserve r16 backup software full marks. After putting it through a battery of stringent tests, PC Pro's reviewer concluded that it offers “an unbeatable range of data-protection features”.
“The review highlights how this new version of ARCserve has responded to what the market really wants,” says Andy Podrenek, account manager at CA Southern Africa.
Podrenek explains that ARCserve r16 offers all businesses a range of backup options plus direct integration into any data centre. In so doing, it allows managed service providers to offer a managed backup service. “Another key benefit for South African users is the innovative approach to pricing,” Podrenek says. “A 'pay as you grow' option allows managed service providers to pay for licences used per month. That means there is no upfront investment in licences.”
It's this kind of approach, Podrenek believes, that will foster competition by allowing new companies to enter the managed service provider space - good news for consumers.
For end-users, ARCserve r16 offers the normal agent-based option, and in addition, a managed capacity program. In the latter case, the user is charged per terabyte of data backed up, but gets full access to all the agents needed to achieve the backup.
The ARCserve r16 suite supports both virtual and physical environments from the same product, and offers a single management console through which the total environment can be viewed. And by restoring a backup to a virtual environment, a company can test its virtualisation before taking it live. “What stands out in this review is how easy this product is to use, the list of features that come as standard and the pricing options - all of which speak directly to South African users,” says Podrenek.
