CA implements business unit alignment

Johannesburg, 11 Apr 2005

Computer Associates International, Inc, one of the world`s largest management software companies, today announced it has completed a business unit alignment designed to enable CA to be more accountable to business and customer needs, and more responsive to the changing dynamics of the management software marketplace.

"CA is in a unique position to address a critical need of its customers," said CA President and CEO John Swainson. "No other technology company possesses the deep experience and broad product portfolio necessary to help customers manage and secure enterprises as a single entity - across platforms, systems, applications and technology stacks. Systems and security management is our core strength. We intend to build on this strength and consolidate our leadership position in enterprise management."

Swainson said the business unit alignment is an organisational step to help support the company`s leadership position in enterprise management.

"One of my key priorities this year is to ensure we align CA to the market opportunities before us," he said. "The business unit structure is a proven tool in the technology industry and is a natural next step for CA. We will maintain our focus on the integration of solutions and ensure this continues to be a competitive advantage. This is truly a major effort for CA, and will give us the kind of accountability necessary to drive leadership across the company and growth for the long-term."

CA`s business unit general managers will now be accountable for all aspects of the management and financial performance of their business unit, including profit and loss, product development and innovation, product marketing, staffing, strategic planning and execution, and customer satisfaction. The company anticipates being able to provide certain financial metrics by business unit with its first quarter fiscal year 2006 financial reports.

"These five business units will give us an effective way to meet our customer needs and market and develop industry-leading products," said Russell Artzt, CA`s executive vice-president for products, who will oversee all the business units. "In addition, we will still have a number of centralised functions to streamline the overall management of the group to ensure we continue to think ahead in terms of customer needs."

The business units are as follows:

Enterprise Systems Management

Operations for the company`s enterprise systems management business unit will be led by Alan F Nugent, the former chief technology officer of Novell, who will join CA on 8 April. As senior vice-president and general manager of Enterprise Systems Management, Nugent will focus on growing CA`s leadership position in systems and database management solutions for the mainframe and distributed environments. Products in this group will include most of CA`s Unicenter solutions.

Security Management

Toby Weiss, formerly senior vice-president for eTrust product management and marketing, will now lead the Security Management business unit as senior vice-president and general manager. Weiss will be charged with continuing to build out CA`s portfolio of world-class security management solutions and ensuring they are integrated with CA`s overall management software solutions. Particular areas of focus are identity and access management, threat management and security information management.

Storage Management

Chris Broderick will continue in his leadership role for the Storage Management business unit, as senior vice-president and general manager. He will be responsible for driving CA`s storage business and ensuring storage is integrated with CA`s other management software solutions.

Business Service Optimisation (BSO)

Jacob Lamm, former product development lead for Unicenter, will serve as senior vice-president and general manager of BSO. This is a new area of focus for CA that will leverage lifecycle and systems management technologies to access a new opportunity: Business Service Optimisation. These solutions will help customers with business process modelling, IT governance, IT service management and enterprise change management.

CA Products Group

Seasoned CA development executive Mark Combs will serve as senior vice-president and general manager of the newly formed CA Products Group, which will be composed of solutions from a number of CA brands that fall outside of CA`s core areas of systems and security management. These products are critical to customers, and generate significant revenue for CA. The business unit will focus on ensuring customers deliver value from these solutions and will focus its development investments on technology currency and enhancements based on specific customer requirements.

Additional executives reporting to Artzt are:

* Christine Glynn who will continue in her role as the senior vice-president overseeing Customer Support in a centralised role for all of the business units.

* Yogesh Gupta who will continue in his role as senior vice-president and chief technology officer. In this role Gupta will continue to help define CA`s technology vision, and ensure a common technology architecture and development standards across the business units. He will also oversee the development and operations of CA solutions for emerging technologies, including wireless and mobility, RFID and pervasive computing.

* Guy Harrison who will take on a new role as senior vice-president for Business Unit Operations.

* Rob Levy, who formerly led CA`s AllFusion development, will lead the new Centre for Technology Strategy (CTS) as senior vice-president and chief technology strategist. The CTS will be responsible for defining, articulating and driving the execution of CA`s technology vision and strategy, and ensuring CA`s technology is at the forefront in each of its selected markets.

* David Luft who will oversee a new Small and Medium Business (SMB) Program Office charged with the development and packaging of CA solutions for the SMB marketplace.

* Gary Starkey who will spearhead a new customer-facing function, serving as senior vice-president of the Executive Technology Advisors. In this role, Starkey will lead a team that will work closely with CIOs and their organisations to understand their business challenges and ensure CA`s solutions deliver maximum value.
