CA mindful of rights with new security offering

Computer Associates` new eTrust 20/20 product utilises software it supplied to the US government to train F16 pilots.

Speaking at the 2002 CAWorld conference in Florida last week, CA president and CEO Sanjay Kumar explained that the new eTrust 20/20 security software is unlikely to intrude on an individual`s right to privacy as the software tracks individuals` patterns rather than their every move.

"Companies should monitor their employees` behaviour patterns rather than individual movements. There is a fine line between legitimate monitoring and an individual`s right to privacy," he said.

Kumar noted that eTrust 20/20 provides a rich visual interface that is easily managed by someone who is not technically proficient.

Visual "playback" functionality also provides analysis and documentation capabilities, which according to Kumar, are essential for discovering, preventing, remedying and prosecuting inappropriate or malicious behaviour.

eTrust 20/20 visually highlights abnormal events, giving security managers insight into workplaces that are physically and technologically more difficult to monitor because of size or layout.

In keeping with CA`s new business model, eTrust 20/20 will be offered as a subscription service. Customers will be provided with technical support as part of the subscription fee, with a CA engineer spending 90 days on site to set up the software to individual specifications and train staff.

Kumar said the product would be available later this year.
