Computer Associates International, Inc (CA) today announced that IDC has named CA the worldwide leader in distribution with a 14.7% market share. CA`s 13.4% revenue growth - more than four times the industry average - also surpassed the competition.

Entitled "Worldwide Software Distribution Market Forecast and Analysis 2002 - 2007", the report said the worldwide software distribution market reached $823.7 million in 2002, a 2.9% increase from the prior year. IDC projects the market to grow to more than $1 billion by 2007.

IDC says software distribution tools focus primarily on pushing an application or operating environment to a new user location. Functions include packaging, distributing, installing and updating an application or operating environment.

CA`s Unicenter Software Delivery provides a highly scalable and means of distributing software across servers, desktop PCs, laptops/notebooks, PDAs and mobile phones.

It also integrates with additional CA solutions to create a comprehensive environment for managing enterprise assets, ensuring desktop security and automating end-user support - tasks critical to provisioning and managing on-demand computing environments.

"This market has vendors that provide solutions that perform only software distribution," said Frederick W Broussard, Senior Research Analyst for IDC. "However, the strongest vendors, such as CA, have solutions that not only perform software distribution, but can augment their software distribution solution with IT asset management, remote control and problem management for a solution that focuses on lifecycle management."

Recent IDC reports have also cited CA`s market leadership on other key management markets, including enterprise system and storage management, performance and availability management, and security 3A (administration, authorisation and authentication).

"Corporate IT managers are increasingly pleased with the functionality and breadth of CA`s management solutions and with CA as a long-term technology partner," said Mark J Barrenechea, senior vice-president of product development at CA. "By continuing to deliver leading-edge technology and services that our valued customers demand, CA will extend its global leadership in a diverse range of important software markets."
