Computer Associates International, Inc (NYSE: CA) today announced it has named Kenneth V Handal as executive vice-president and general counsel, reporting to Kenneth D Cron, CA`s interim chief executive officer.
Currently associate general counsel at the Altria family of companies, Handal has practiced for more than 30 years as a lawyer in government, as a partner in a national law firm and at Altria. His legal expertise is compliance, corporate governance, litigation and corporate law. He will begin working at CA in July.
In addition, the company promoted Mark J Barrenechea to executive vice-president for product development and Dan Kaferle to senior vice-president for corporate communications.

For the past eight years, Handal, 55, has served as in-house compliance and ethics counsel for Altria, the parent company to some of the world`s largest consumer packaged goods companies, including Kraft Foods, Philip Morris USA and Philip Morris International. While there he helped build the company`s enhanced Compliance & Integrity program for its 166 000 employees in more than 150 countries. In addition, Handal oversaw critical areas of their litigation and served as counsel for their corporate audit and records management groups.
Prior to joining Altria, Handal was a partner with Arnold & Porter where he managed securities, banking, product liability and international litigation for domestic and foreign corporations, as well as work in corporate and securities law. Earlier he was an assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York, Criminal Division.
He founded pro bono programs at Arnold & Porter and Altria, which won the American Corporate Counsel`s 2002 award for best corporate pro bono programme. He serves as a director for The Legal Aid Society, Association of the Bar of the City of New York Fund, Inc, Brooklyn Academy of Music and the International League for Human Rights.
Handal earned his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School where he was managing editor of the Law Review, and his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.
Barrenechea, 39, joined CA in 2003 as senior vice-president for product development. He oversees the majority of CA`s worldwide research and development activities, and is responsible for ensuring customer-focused innovation across the company`s brand units. Previously, Barrenechea served in a variety of positions at Oracle Corporation, including senior vice-president, applications development, and as a member of the Executive Management Committee. Prior to Oracle, Barrenechea was vice-president for application development at Scopus Technology and Ceridian/Tesseract Corporation. Barrenechea is the author of eBusiness or Out of Business (McGraw-Hill 2001) and Software Rules (McGraw-Hill, 2002).
Kaferle, 52, joined CA in 2002 as senior vice-president for worldwide public relations. Prior to joining CA, he was senior vice-president and general manager of the Boston office of the public relations firm of Blanc and Otus, a leader in technology communications and a subsidiary of Hill and Knowlton. He has also served as vice-president for corporate public relations at Digital Equipment Corp, second vice-president for external communications at The Travelers Companies and director of public relations at Staples Inc. Kaferle also spent 14 years as a newspaper reporter, the last six as a state capitol correspondent in Hartford, Connecticut.
