Computer Associates (CA) and Sony have announced a global alliance which will see the two organisations leverage their hardware and expertise for the benefit of the mid-range and enterprise storage markets.

The alliance, which was announced at CAWorld in Las Vegas yesterday, will involve the integration of CA`s BrightStor storage management technology with Sony`s PetaSite and StorStation storage systems.

By combining their respective hardware and software expertise, Sony and CA believe they will be able to deliver secure storage solutions that will provide customers with storage environments to more effectively and efficiently protect critical business .

This alliance between CA and Sony is expected to result in a number of value-added solutions. These will include integration of Sony`s core competency in magnetic recording with CA`s BrightStor Enterprise Backup, the combination of Sony`s file servers and tape libraries with CA`s storage management software, and a plan to develop enterprise solutions, based on Sony data systems products and CA`s BrightStor technologies.

"Customers continue to seek storage solutions to safeguard their valuable data without excessive cost or excessive administration. Together, CA and Sony will provide products that fulfil these ongoing market requirements," says Frank Yang, CA senior VP of BrightStor Solutions.

According to Masashi Takao, senior GM, Storage Solutions Division of Sony`s Communication Company: "CA and Sony will work together toward the goal of providing customers with complete and optimised solutions for an open, mission-critical storage environment.

"We aim to achieve this by leveraging the respective core competencies of the two organisations: CA`s in storage management technology and Sony`s in magnetic recording and tape library technologies."
