CA warns against MyDoom variants, draws parallel with Bagle

Johannesburg, 14 Sep 2004

Computer Associates` Security Advisor team has urged people to be on the lookout for four new variants of the MyDoom virus (variants U,V,W,X) which have all surfaced the last two days.

Although these variants pose a low threat, the last time so many variants of one virus were released in such a short time period was in May when four minor versions of the Bagle virus emerged, followed by a major new strain that went straight to medium and then to high alert in a matter of hours.

Importantly, the latest MyDoom variants are also headed towards the end of the alphabet and CA believes that the "AA" variant may be the big one.

"Already, we are seeing direct parallels between MyDoom and Bagle and, therefore, urge users to take extra precautions to protect their PCs - making sure that signature files are updated and not opening attachments from unknown sources," comments Danny Ilic, business development owner (enterprise management and security) at Computer Associates Africa
